A Historic Deodar Cedar Coffee Table

This coffee table was made from a Deodar Cedar Tree that once stood at the Hampton-Preston Mansion in Columbia, SC. Historic records show this tree was on the grounds in 1840 at the corner of Laurel and Pickens St. During the Civil War, the house was used as the headquarters of Union Major General John A. Logan. When the tree died, the caretakers of the mansion contacted Artist Stephen Owen who specializes in building furniture from big trees destined for the landfill. Owen asked that the tree be dug up with the root ball. While cutting the table, he discovered the remnants of a bullet most likely fired by Union soldiers using the tree for target practice. A purple-green bullet stain is visible on the table and adds both character and a wonderful conversation starter.
